3. Reflection:
Experience
The overall experience was both challenging and fun. Typography is one of my passions in the design field. The tasks were innovative and engaging, providing me with opportunities to learn about layout systems, typographic history, doing experimental based design, and even constructing my own font. These tasks enhanced my design skills in general, from brainstorming ideas and executing designs to presenting in motion form or using mock-ups. Since I did not attend a typography class at this school and chose experimental typefaces for my task 3, I feel I did not fully experience the normal type construction process. However, I am inspired and intend to design a font that addresses existing problems in the future.
Observation
I noticed the importance of application design. Typography design and branding are closely linked to real life; we need to know how to apply designs practically. I feel there is room for improvement for me in designing collateral. Sometimes the idea and design are good, but when it comes to application, it is not as engaging from my perspective, despite numerous attempts. One reason might be spending too much time on the same task, another reason is I could not imagine how my design would show on those items. It's crucial to get feedback from others at this stage. Friends and teachers can provide useful suggestions and different opinions. It is also interesting to see how others approach their designs, as everyone produces a unique outcome that inspires me.
Findings
The design process involves a lot of trial and error. Despite many failed attempts, each step of the journey is valuable and contributes to learning and growth, allows me to do better in future projects. The experimental tasks improved my creativity, design theory provided a basic guideline for my aesthetic sense, and the application requirements made me think about how to apply all these elements in real life.
