Experience

Working on this dissertation was both challenging and rewarding. My topic, The Effectiveness of Gamified Rewards on Language Learning Motivation, came from my interest in how apps keep users engaged. I started with a literature review, which helped me understand what’s already been studied and what gaps still exist. Then I created a survey to collect data from people who use language learning apps. It was my first time managing a full research project on my own—from planning and designing the study to collecting and analyzing the data. This whole process taught me how much work and focus academic research really takes.

Observation

As I worked through the project, I noticed that user motivation depends on many things—not just rewards or game-like features. Personal goals, age, and even habits seemed to play a role in how people use language learning apps. When I looked at the survey results, I found that while people enjoyed gamified rewards, these weren’t the only reasons they kept using the app. I also learned how important it is to write clear survey questions. A few of mine were confusing, and that made it harder to understand some of the answers. I realized that having a clear, focused topic is better than trying to cover too much at once.

Findings

Looking back, I’ve learned a lot from this project. I improved my research and writing skills, and I became better at analyzing data. I also learned to be more patient and to keep going, even when things didn’t go as planned—like when fewer people responded to the survey than I hoped. If I could do it again, I would start collecting data earlier so I’d have more time to go deeper into the analysis. Overall, this research helped me better understand how motivation works in learning apps and made me even more interested in user experience and digital learning tools. It’s been a meaningful part of my learning journey.
