Week 1: Briefing & Task Arrangement

We proceed Major 2 with initial Major Project 1 member Jun Jie, Shawn, and Wei Yi and continue to further execute Travel Kaki app. We have and physical and online subject briefing for this week. During physical class, as all my are time clash with exchange program and other class time schedule, I consult alone with UI/UX supervisors, Dr.Wong, Mr.Shamsul and Mr.Razif.

As Mr. Shamsul suggested us to include booking feature or AI auto book feature in our app, we holds different opinions as some think internal booking makes the app complicated, while redirecting to other booking app will increase other app’s usage instead of boosting our app’s usage, we decided to do research on booking flow before we make decision.

We realised that the find travel buddy feature is important as it is also one of our MVP in the initial plan, we had to create a new flow and screen for it. Need to add user verification steps on sign up flow.

We found our Lo-Fi still needs more polish and realistic content. The UI kit and component have to be set up before starting the high fidelity to maintain consistency.

Week 3 - Hi-Fi Refinement

This week I did not assign new task as most of the week 2 task need further refinement and all of us are busy for CNY celebrations. We decided to meet next week and continue to work on current task.

I continue to refine the Planning flow by studying AI chat behaviour and flow. I also added comment in Figma file for areas of improvement. This comment allows me to track where need to improve easily. As I go through the file, there are many inconsistency happened around although the UI component was set.

Week 4 - Animation & Prototype Linking

This week, we focus on Animation and prototype linking. All members are good at prototype linking, so I decided to assign them with animation and prototype task, and I work on consistency management and badge illustrations.

We also conducted user testing for our app. Each group member was assigned to interview one user. I chose to interview a friend who just traveled and have experience using Trip.com (Booking app with planning function)

2. FEEDBACK

Week 1
Mr. Shamsul:

Subscription plan
Don’t give too much limitation on basic plan, it will demotivate users to use your app.
Subscribed plans can include “no advertisement”.

Current MVP
What is beside suggesting? Now AI is smart, what is the difference between you and the other AI?
You have to do research on any API that allows one app to connect with another app to make booking like Gemini, to help you book things. In flowchart you can include that.

Other features
Find travel buddy feature with user info verification.
Gamification: Can collaborate with a hotel, if earn points, can get a discount using your point.
Sharing function to let them share on social media.
Feel that the information architecture map is too cluttered, can try to redo card sorting, cut down into about 20 cards.
No need to have a mascot but nice to have, focus on building function first.

Dr. Wong Chui Yin
Give your app a name that sounds more like a personal assistant.
Sort out the different target group’s need of using AI or your app:
Onboarding questions are common, and need to have options for more conditions. Customise the flow based on user need.
first, imagine your app into a personal assistant that collect your need such as:
What do you want to plan for? Solo traveling / family travel
What do you need? Family facilities/wheel-chair friendly/Mother room/pet allowed restaurant
What is your concern? Budget/safety/ distance
Other needs? One member have knee problem/dieting/muslim friendly
Then, AI helps plan the trip based on all the needs.
Suggest to revisit your research target and collect more information.
Expected to have complex content as it is a group project.
Good that you have gamification

Mr. Razif
You need to see how your outcomes are different with other AI tools. Gemini don’t come out with things like your itinerary, so it is one of the differences.
how you interact with it, and what is the outcome.

3. REFLECTION

Experience

Leading this project was both challenging and rewarding. Travel solution is an interesting topic and I enjoyed the process of designing the app. Conducting user interviews provided valuable insights into travelers’ struggles, such as budgeting, safety, and decision fatigue. I was responsible for designing the experience-sharing flow in our wireframes and explored various layouts for trip planning and discovery. A key challenge came when feedback revealed our AI integration was unclear. Our design initially felt like a standard travel app, so we revised it to emphasize AI-driven planning. This process taught me the importance of adaptability and refining ideas based on feedback.

Observations

User research heavily influenced our design decisions. Initially, our ideas were broad, but through interviews and testing, we refined them based on real user needs. Travelers wanted both structured planning and spontaneous exploration, which shaped our AI trip planner. Our process was highly iterative—our information architecture, wireframes, and user flows been through multiple revisions. After receiving feedback, we also notice that AI shouldn’t just be a feature but should define the user experience. Our original UI lacked an AI-driven feel, leading us to rethink how AI interacts with users and enhances their travel planning experience.

Findings

A key finding was that users value efficiency in travel planning. They don’t just need information but a system that simplifies decision-making. Another takeaways was that constant iteration is necessary. Our initial ideas changed a lot after we got real user insights. We also realized that trying to include too many features made our app feel unfocused, so we had to simplify it. Testing methods like card sorting helped us see what worked and what didn’t. Another important thing was documentation—keeping track of research findings and design decisions made it easier to organize our work. Overall, I learned that design isn’t a one-time thing; it’s a process that requires constant changes and improvements. Lastly, effective UI design needs to clearly communicate its purpose to better address the main issue.
