Project 1

1. LECTURES:

Week4 Class

Hard sound: Sound that can be seen (dialogue,  doing something, step sound)

Ambient sound: background sound (aircon, making coffee, typing)

Ambient cross a little bit, add audio transition (fade in fade out.)

Pitch tuning:

1. Effect > audio effect >Time and pitch >pitch effect.

2. Throw it to the audio

3. Adjust semi tone left low, right high

Week 10 Video Tutorial

1. To create new file in Adobe Audition: File > New > Multitrack Session

2. To add effect:

- Effect Rack > Filter and EQ > Parametric Equalizer

- Effect Rack > Reverb >  Reverb...

3. Phone call sound: Parametric Equalizer (Lower bass and treble, higher Midrange)

4. Muffled sound: Parametric Equalizer (Bass remain, lower treble, higher Midrange)

5. Reverb

Decay Time: Specifies how many milliseconds the reverb takes to decay 60 dB.Longer values give longer reverb tails.

Pre‑Delay Time: Specifies how many milliseconds reverb takes to build to its maximum amplitude.

Perception:Simulates irregularities in the environment

Dry: To add subtle spaciousness, set the Dry percentage higher; to achieve a special effect, set the Dry percentage lower.

Wet: To add subtle spaciousness to a track, keep the Wet percentage lower than the Dry percentage.

2. INSTRUCTIONS:

Project 1 Exercise 1: Audio Dubbing

Work Progress

1. Check the video and dialogue script
2. Spreadsheet: List down all scenes, duration, dialogue, sound effect and ambience sound need to use.
Spread Sheet (Google Sheet)

3. Record dialogue with phone, transfer to computer.

4. check the sound whether it synce well with the video. This part took me a longer time because Waymond talk very fast, and the final dialogue material still a little bit slower than the original sound, so i adjust the speend in After Effect.
4. Search for suitable sound effect, I mainly use Pixabay, freesound and YouTube to find the sources. (Pixabay and YouTube have many free and good sound effect. )
5. Audio arrangment: Put all sound one by one, cut the length and insert to the video. Dialogue, Sound effect, aambience sound, 3 rows each.

6. Adjust the pitch of the dialogue, timing of sound effect, and volume of every audio track.

7. Final checking and exporting the video.

Project 1 Exercise 2: Sound Shaping
Work Progress

1. Phone call
Phone call sound produced by appying the Parametric Equalizer, then lowering bass and treble, and increase the midrange.

2. Voice from Closet
Parametric Equalizer is applied. The treble is decreased while the midrange is increased.

3. Voice in Bathroom
Reverb is applied to produced this effect. Some adjustment have made to give some echo as voice in bathroom usually have some echo and more reflective sound.

4. Voice in underground cave
Reverb is applied to produced this effect. I modified the ethereal effects as it is similar with underground cave voice, they both has a very strong echo, longer delay and spacious feelings.

3. Alien/Orc Voice
Pitch Shifter is used to produced the alien voice. I have tried the reverb effect but it does not give a strong "alien" feelings, so I used pitch shifter do the alien voice as we had learned to use it from exercise 1.

Project 1 Exercise 2: Sound Shaping Submission:

1. Phone call

2. Voice from closet

3. Bathroom

4. Underground Cave

5. Alien

3. Feedback:

No feedback

4. Reflection:

The dialogue part struggle me a lot because my voice does not quite match with the character, so it sound weird and i recorded a few times for each, and choose the best version. I've learned how to adjust the pitch of the voice, it is really helpful eventhough it is still a very basic skills. Sourcing the sound effect also takes time, where there are a lot resources on internet, sometimes it is not match with the original video feelings, so i have to look for better track. Overall, i enjoy the process and it is fun.

The exercise 2 is a hands on exercise for me to get familiar with Adobe Audition as I never use this software before. This is an interesting exercise which allow student to modify the voice for different environment. I had learned to use Parametric equalizer and reverb to do audio effects.
