Project 2 Shooting Practise & Editing

1. LECTURES:

Colour correction and colour grading practice.

1. Basic colour correction. Use Lumiteri scopes to compare the brightness, contrast and exposure of the scenes.

2.Adjust white balance to make the colour looks more natural.

Asynchronies material:
Steps of colouring digital video footage: decide a picture profile, colour correction, and colour grading.
Colour correction is to make the video looks more natural and realistic while colour grading is to create atmosphere and feelings. HSB is the colour term used in colour grading software. I got to learn about colour grading theory and how to use the colour correction tools in the software.

Video Shooting and Editing Work Progress

1. Video Shooting:
I first started shooting the video in my room. I used a yellow table lamp to create some atmosphere. For the outdoor scenes, I filmed on the school campus. Luckily, the weather was good, so I was able to capture some blue sky shots.

2. Footage Import and Arrangement:
Next, I imported the footage into Capcut and arranged it according to the storyboard.

First cut:

3. Editing and Syncing:
After confirming the order of the footage, I began editing the video to sync with the music.

4. Applying Filters:
Filters were then applied to the video. A film filter was used for the indoor scenes to give a cinematic feel, while a clear filter was applied to the outdoor scenes to provide a refreshing atmosphere. Some colour adjustments were made to ensure consistency in the tone of each scene.

5. Adding Stickers and Text:
Since there were no lines in the video, I chose to express the emotion through the scenes and with the help of graphics. I added some stickers and text to enhance the storytelling.

Second Cut:

6. Enhancing Tension:
After reviewing the video, I felt the tension in the exhausting working scenes could be stronger. So, I decided to add some Dutch angle shots and flipped-up-and-down scenes to intensify the stress.

7. Final Adjustments:
I received feedback from Mr. Martin to use a stronger filter for some outdoor scenes. Based on this feedback, I readjusted the colouring for the final touches.

Project 2-Production Shooting
Our group is tasked with recreating a scene from the movie "Everything, Everywhere All At Once" in the studio. Each person will be assigned a specific role. I am responsible for audio and lighting setup during the production shoot. Once the shoot is completed, we need to do video editing.

Editing Work Progress:
1. All footage is imported, trimmed, and synced with the audio.
2. Basic corrections such as contrast, exposure, and white balance are adjusted.
3. Colour grading is applied to each scene according to requirements:
  • Teal & Orange,
  • Bluish (cold),
  • Greenish (cold),
  • Brownish (warm),
  • Desaturation, 50%-70%,
  • B & W, High Contrast.
At this stage, I am unsure about how to make the editing more creative, so I gather everything with my preferred flow. It results in scenes with different colour grading, but nothing more special.

Mr. Martin then shared some past student work with more creatively edited styles, resulting in movie teasers. Inspired by this, I contemplate themes for the editing but remain clueless.

4. I decided to search for music to get inspiration, as I realised that most of the atmosphere comes from the music. I found some scenes that were workable to create a thriller storyline. The teaser gives a clue to the strange feeling of a man who is holding a secret from his partner, whom he has been watching and staying around nearby for a long time.

5. I replan the flow and apply more suitable colour grading for the storyline. A greenish filter is applied to give a strange and villainous feeling, brownish or desaturated tones are used in story feelings and recall scenes, and B&W is applied when the character shows his dark side.

6. Dip black, addictive dissolve video transition are apply to the footage.
7. Adjust audio level for background music and dialogue.

3. Feedback:

Week 7:
Edit with more creative way and apply the colour grading mentioned in the slide.

Week 10:
Add stronger filter for the tiktok/insta video.

4. Reflection:

Group production shooting is a practical and fun experience for me. I was able to learn hot to use the equipment and collaborate with other people to produce a film. I thought audio and lightning team will be a simple job, but it need severe time of adjustment to produce nice lighting.

The video editing part is struggling as I have no idea on how to edit it creatively as I was limited my thought by the original movie storyline. The past student example pull me out from the box and trigger me to think about other ways to edit the video.

Overall, I had learned to handle film production equipment and experienced professional way to do the post editing especially for colour correction and grading. It would be helpful for my future assignment.

I had the chance to create a video based on my own preferences for the Tiktok/Insta video. I found the storyboard to be very important. A well-planned storyboard provides a good reference for the shooting process and speeds up the arrangement of footage. In my opinion, the color correction tools in Premiere Pro are more handy than those in Capcut. However, Capcut makes the editing process easier because it offers a lot of resources for music, filters, and effects.
