Experience
My experience with the design research methodology courses has been both difficult and informative. I had a hard time at first finding quality articles to read through and conducting research, which took a lot of time and effort. Selecting a suitable research topic was challenging as well, especially ensuring data collection was feasible. Writing and editing the content was required throughout the entire process, which I am not good at. But as I read the articles more closely, I was able to understand how the authors organised their plans, carried out their studies, and gathered information. I also gained knowledge of different data analysis systems and research methods. My knowledge of conducting research has improved, and I have gained useful knowledge from reading the literature and critical review.
Data collecting was one of my main challenges. I have limited network connections, so it is hard for me to find participants. To overcome this, I try to spread my data to all my possible connections and also spread through various facebook groups, Whatsapp group chat and Instagram. Though, it still needs a lot of effort to repost, keep contact and keep reaching different people. I would say it is a tough process. Another key problem was time management, as research requires detailed planning to allow sufficient collection and analysis. Things do not always go the way we think. The entire process took longer than what I planned. I realised that planning should be made as early as possible to avoid insufficient time to do things.
Observation
I noticed that research papers provided valuable advice for future readers and researchers as well as providing insights into their own topics. They showed different approaches to conducting research, which helped me plan my own studies. I discovered that effective data collection required reaching out to as many people as possible via various platforms. Furthermore, time management came out as an important factor in ensuring sufficient time for data collection and analysis. The use of technological tools such as Google Sheets pivot tables was critical for data analysis, emphasising the importance of technological knowledge in research. Canva also has handy tools for making charts but limited adjustable function and inaccuracy in reading Google Sheets tables.
Findings
Throughout the research process, I gained valuable insight when doing my study topic which is reward systems for user retention and motivation in language learning apps. I found that reward systems should be consistent with the intrinsic motivation of users in order to support them in reaching their own goals with continuous engagement. Designing engaging apps requires a better understanding of user preference, behaviour, factors of incentives and the relation between features and users. I realised that I still need to be more familiar with different gamification apps and mechanisms.
Apart from that, I had trouble with data analysis; I wanted to do comparison analysis for my data to get a deeper insight, but I didn't have the necessary skills to conduct it. After that, I reached out to my friends for help. She recommended that I use pivot tables in Google Sheets. My approach to data analysis had been changed by these tools, resulting in a more efficient and simple approach. I wish to know more beginner friendly tools for data analysis so that I can do better in the next research subject. I often get suggestions to use coding for data analysis, but that is not realisable in this short period as I have very limited knowledge of coding. This experience reflects the importance of understanding and using data analysis tools in research. In my opinion, it is valuable to be demonstrated in coursework so that students can do better in analysing data for any research project.
