Project 1 - Animated Infographic Poster

1. LECTURES:

2. INSTRUCTIONS:

Project1

REQUIREMENT:
Your main intention is to analyse the “delivery mechanism’s” that affect the outcomes of your infographics. Though content is important, however the aim of this presentation is too look at what makes an infographic presentation work or does not work. This includes content but only as one of the many components of an infographic:

PART 1: Infographic poster (10%)
INSTRUCTION:
1.Choose 1 infographic poster reference from Internet (Please consult before proceed)
2. Redesign the poster into A4 size. Sketch the idea and process
3. Redesign and simplify the poster based on visual hierarchy & typography
4. Simplify the poster's design based on color, shape & pattern
5. Attach your final poster on E-Portfolio with explanation and reflective writing

Progression

3 Infographic option:

I decided to proceed with second poster. I found severe problem from the poster which needed to fix:

Clutter & Complex:
  1. The overlapping swirling lines make it hard to track individual countries.
  2. Color represents different countries, but the overlap makes it difficult to identify the trends.
  3. The x-axis (rate of change in deaths per day) and y-axis (average deaths per day) do not effectively deliver the data.
  4. It takes effort to see how changes correlate over time.
Typography & Readability Issues:
  1. Text placement and size is inconsistent, with labels scattered across the image.
  2. Some text overlaps with colored lines, making it difficult to read.
Visual Hierarchy Problems:
  • No clear focal point – the viewer's eye jumps around without direction.
  • Key dates and trends could be emphasized better.

Reference:

I decided to separate the information into different chart and come out with sketches.

The graph combined 3 sets of information, which is timeline, rate of change and average death per day.
I faced problem at very beginning, It is hard to sort out the actual data from the chart, as my plan was to separate them into 3 different graph, accurate data for each day is needed.

I look for some data source website, and i found the related data:
https://ourworldindata.org/covid-deaths

This data shows 7 day rolling average of death for all countries during pandemic. However, the data in my chart is different set of data, which comes from average and rate of change. So, i decided to download the excel file and done my own calculations for the average and rate of change for each day.
The process is fast with the help of excel formula.

Then I started to execute based on the sketches.

Final Static Poster

PART 2: Minimal animated infographic (10%)
INSTRUCTION: 1. Animate your infographic poster into one static loop animation page
2. Loop duration in between 15-30 second
3. Size: 1080 x 1920 px (Vertical Video) upload to your own Youtube channel

SUBMISSION:
1. Digital upload into your Google Drive.
2. Online posts in your E-Portfolio and your reflective writing. (Please attach the E-Portfolio link here for submission.)

Software: After Effect
Duration: 20 Second

Since the poster is made up of a graph and a timeline, Trim Path effects are suitable for animation. I searched for online tutorials on Trim Path and added rotation for icons and blinking opacity for the timeline dots to make it more dynamic.
The path imported from Adobe Illustrator came as a shape, so I had to manually copy the path from Illustrator to After Effects and change the color one by one.
For the graph label, corner reveal transition effect was applied. At the end, everything returns to the beginning to create a seamless loop.

Some of the text was too small to read in the animated poster, so the size was adjusted accordingly.

Final Animated Poster

3. REFLECTION

This project provided a hands on learning of how visual hierarchy, typography, and data presentation impact an infographic’s effectiveness. The original poster had major issues, with cluttered overlapping lines and inconsistent text placement, making it difficult to track trends. The data was combined in a way that was hard to follow, so the redesign focused on separating information into three different graphs for better clarity.

Extracting accurate data was challenging at first, as the original chart combined timeline, rate of change, and average deaths per day into one. Using Excel formulas helped speed up the process of calculating averages and rate of change for each day for more accurate data representation.. The animation phase added more dynamic elements using Trim Path effects, icon rotation, and opacity changes to create a smooth flow.

This project shows the importance of choosing the right tools, simplifying complex data, and applying strong visual hierarchy to create an engaging and effective infographic. Although progress was made, I hope to learn more about analyzing and identifying what makes a good or bad infographic. by understanding what works and what doesn’t. Sometimes, it’s hard to be certain about design choices, so developing a sharper eye for effective visual communication will be valuable in future projects.
