Project 1 - Animated Infographic
Poster
1. LECTURES:
Your main intention is to analyse the “delivery mechanism’s” that affect the outcomes of your infographics. Though content is important, however the aim of this presentation is too look at what makes an infographic presentation work or does not work. This includes content but only as one of the many components of an infographic:
1.Choose 1 infographic poster reference from Internet (Please consult before proceed)
2. Redesign the poster into A4 size. Sketch the idea and process
3. Redesign and simplify the poster based on visual hierarchy & typography
4. Simplify the poster's design based on color, shape & pattern
5. Attach your final poster on E-Portfolio with explanation and reflective writing
- The overlapping swirling lines make it hard to track individual countries.
- Color represents different countries, but the overlap makes it difficult to identify the trends.
- The x-axis (rate of change in deaths per day) and y-axis (average deaths per day) do not effectively deliver the data.
- It takes effort to see how changes correlate over time.
- Text placement and size is inconsistent, with labels scattered across the image.
- Some text overlaps with colored lines, making it difficult to read.
- No clear focal point – the viewer's eye jumps around without direction.
- Key dates and trends could be emphasized better.
Since the poster is made up of a graph and a timeline, Trim Path effects are suitable for animation. I searched for online tutorials on Trim Path and added rotation for icons and blinking opacity for the timeline dots to make it more dynamic.
The path imported from Adobe Illustrator came as a shape, so I had to manually copy the path from Illustrator to After Effects and change the color one by one.
For the graph label, corner reveal transition effect was applied. At the end, everything returns to the beginning to create a seamless loop.
Some of the text was too small to read in the animated poster, so the size was adjusted accordingly.
This project provided a hands on learning of how visual hierarchy, typography, and data presentation impact an infographic’s effectiveness. The original poster had major issues, with cluttered overlapping lines and inconsistent text placement, making it difficult to track trends. The data was combined in a way that was hard to follow, so the redesign focused on separating information into three different graphs for better clarity.
Extracting accurate data was challenging at first, as the original chart combined timeline, rate of change, and average deaths per day into one. Using Excel formulas helped speed up the process of calculating averages and rate of change for each day for more accurate data representation.. The animation phase added more dynamic elements using Trim Path effects, icon rotation, and opacity changes to create a smooth flow.
This project shows the importance of choosing the right tools, simplifying complex data, and applying strong visual hierarchy to create an engaging and effective infographic. Although progress was made, I hope to learn more about analyzing and identifying what makes a good or bad infographic. by understanding what works and what doesn’t. Sometimes, it’s hard to be certain about design choices, so developing a sharper eye for effective visual communication will be valuable in future projects.
The drop shadow on the box is too much. Layout is okay
